Pioneering User-Centred Transformation in a Complex Environment

My role at the Ministry of Justice involved leading the charge in UX Design for an ongoing project of utmost sensitivity, which unfortunately prevents me from sharing specific project details. However, I played a central role in evaluating the current state of the system and orchestrating improvements, including the integration of new user flows. These enhancements are firmly grounded in user insights and steadfast adherence to Government Digital Service (GDS) standards.

Challenges

Our journey had its fair share of challenges, reflecting the intricacies of our mission. Firstly, we dealt with the constraints of an already partially developed system, presenting its own set of challenges. Additionally, a looming delivery deadline added urgency to our efforts. Managing a diverse array of stakeholders was crucial for project success. One of my undertakings was to conduct a stakeholder mapping workshop, shedding light on key decision-makers and approval processes, all of which needed seamless integration into our design strategy.

Approach

  1. In-Depth User Testing:

To gain a profound understanding of user needs and expectations, I lead several rounds of rigorous user testing. These sessions directly involve users who routinely engage with the system. Our objectives are clear: to unearth pain points, identify areas ripe for improvement, and garner crucial insights into how the system can better align with user expectations and workflows. These insights provide the guiding star for our project's direction.

  2. Collaborative Testing Support:

In addition to spearheading my own user testing rounds, I actively contribute to and support other testing sessions. This collaborative approach ensures that we explore every facet of user needs and preferences comprehensively. By involving a multitude of stakeholders and UX experts, we garner a more holistic understanding of the intricate web of user expectations.

  3. User-Centric Design:

User-centricity is not merely a buzzword but a foundational principle that guides our every design decision. In a project of such sensitivity, empathy and an in-depth understanding of user needs are non-negotiable. We meticulously examine the feedback and insights gleaned from user testing to drive our design choices, guaranteeing that every modification and new user flow is engineered to elevate the user experience.

Outcomes

Whilst I unfortunately can’t provide specific project outcomes, I can affirm that our efforts resulted in tangible and substantial improvements in the system. These enhancements were carefully designed to align with both user expectations and GDS standards.
